When I was about a year out of college and had just returned from living abroad I got my very first apartment. Since I knew that this time I wouldn’t have to attempt to fit everything I owned into a suitcase I set about purchasing those goods one usually gets as wedding gifts (side note: should there not be single people showers for people who don’t rush into marriage and still want kitchen appliances? Yes, yes there should be). These purchases included numerous kitchen start-ups like spices.
At that time I barely cooked anything for myself, relying heavily on spaghetti sauce in jars and frozen veggie patties. However, I apparently thought that I need a utility-sized container of oregano, and why buy cheap when generic will do? I purchased the 2.25 ounce container of oregano pictured above.
Today, nearly 5 years later, I finally used the last of that oregano. It has made the move to three apartments, been through a couple of boyfriends, lasted through my time at General Mills, seen me finish a M.A. degree and my Ph.D. coursework, been there when I instructed my first class, and suddenly became much more in-demand when I started actually cooking elaborate meals for myself about three years ago.
So, thanks, cheap generic oregano. You seasoned many things and I’m glad we made this journey together. I know you will season tonight’s marinara sauce to your finest Flavorite ability.
And please don’t be offended that I already replaced you with organic Whole Foods oregano.
